“Precarious Nurses, Precarious Patients: The Gigification of Nursing Home Care”

Abstract

Gig care is an emerging model that matches caregivers and long-term care institutions through digital platforms. The number of gig caregivers in the United States has surged 1,400% since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. Why do so many caregivers choose to transition to gig work? When caregivers shift drastically from employees to part-time workers, how will this impact care sites and recipients? Based on three years of field research in nursing homes in the United States, this study proposes the concepts of “care fragmentation” and “structure of indifference”, examines the role of gig platforms as intermediaries, and explores how the gig economy reshapes the nature of labor in nursing homes and its profound impact on the quality of care, working conditions, and care relationships.
