Division of Epidemiology

Epidemiology is the study of the distribution and determinants of diseases, disabilities, and death in a population. Research is designed to explore physiological phenomena, pathogenesis, the natural history of diseases, and etiology. The educational objectives include cultivating students with a solid epidemiological knowledge on major concepts (e.g., epidemiological research design, bias and confounding, causal inference, etc.), and preparing students for the use of epidemiological methods and statistical analysis in community research, policy practices and clinical practices, so as to understand the distribution of a disease affecting the health of a population and its determinants. In addition, students will learn to formulate and promote intervention programs for healthcare and disease prevention.

The content of our educational program is designed to establish a foundation based on epidemiology, biostatistics, and community medical research methods to elevate basic knowledge on biomedicine. We emphasize the development of individual interests along with analytical and integration skills. We also provide an environment for epidemiological research, allowing students to have first-hand experience with primary data collection, or use secondary databases for epidemiological research by applying theoretical knowledge of biostatistics and epidemiology into study design and strategic analysis.

Our division includes experts in community epidemiology, clinical epidemiology, pharmacoepidemiology, and genetic epidemiology who perform research on community epidemiology and secondary database analysis. The main focus of research includes mental illnesses and drug abuse, aging and cognitive impairment, nutrition, genetics and cancer, as well as community intervention and population health promotion.

※Since the 103 academic year, the division of epidemiology and preventive medicine have merged into the division of epidemiology.
